Developer Ubiquitous Language

Page history last edited by Doc List 1 yr ago

How do we better communicate these ideas outside the echo chamber.

Arguing of semantics.

Redefining everything.

What is a feature? We all have a different definition of unit of work.

Looking at same thing just dif POV.

If you do Feature Driven Development you better have a definition of feature.

Test-First  vs Test Driven Development are they te same thing.

We need a common language.

Story languages. Given when then. When from should.

Separate semantic arguments.

Concepts and schools of thought change. They continuously improve.

We should back reference our blog entries when we change philosophies.

Martin Fowler regularly back references old blog entries. He retired the MVP pattern.

Should we quit overloading terms and change to more specific clarification.

Ubiquitous language for an instance.

Different mentalities on subjects.

As teachers we need to do a better job of understanding the other POV’s.

Sense of personal responsibility. How do we challenge our own assumptions?

Start at the value work towards the label. This is the problem. This is how we are going to solve it.

Solubility – Make your code present itself to you.

Remember what you didn’t know.

Can we talk about things so that they describe themselves better. They standalone.

Course correct our peers. We need to talk to our peers when they are incorrect or misinformed.

A lot of things are experiential (You need to experience them to understand them). Not book learned.

Safety net. TDD gives you comfort that your code will do what you say it will do. And you didn’t regress it.

This is a people problem first.

Call out glory hounding.

Should we correct conference speakers that clearly violate well known design patterns.

Mentoring people to be mentors.

101 topics need to have better caretakers.

Data access code in the view in ASP MVC framework for example.

Make it clear that you don’t know everything. This is what I know now.

Shadow minion army.

Action Items:

  • Talk about context of what we are saying.
  • Values before labels.
  • We have a professional responsibility to understand more POV’s than our own.
  • We need  to diplomatically correct our peers.
  • Cultivate new leaders.
